Join us as we embark on an epic adventure – biking from Johannesburg to Addis Ababa. That’s like Florida to Alaska, but longer and with more food poisoning. We promise a tale of manifest drama, through burgeoning cities, over deserts, down the Great Rift Valley and up to the Ethiopian highlands for a grand conclusion in Addis Ababa.
Our mission is simple:
» To create a compelling story that brings Sub-Saharan Africa to an American audience in a fun, accessible format.
» To raise mad cash / awareness for the following great causes:
A Story for the 21st Century
The literary travelogue is a classic form of storytelling. Our goal is to refashion it to the vagaries of the Internet, using text, photos, twitter and video to tell one big story in lots of little pieces, delivered as it happens, however an audience wants it. It’s important to note what this isn’t, not a collection of small stories, not a multitude of travel tips nor news, but one story with a beginning, middle and ending.
This is an experiment, a labor of intellectual adventure. What we’re doing in Africa has been done a thousand times over, but here, we hope to chart out new territory. We’re going to loose money. We’re going to make mistakes. But I hope that after it’s all said and done we’ve added just a little bit on how to tell a story in the Era of Justin Bieber.
Ben Stewart graduated from Marquette University with a BA in Political Science. His two years in China, one at the Beijing Center for Chinese Studies, the other as a graduate student at the Johns Hopkins-Nanjing University Center, were transformational; he is now hopelessly in love with all things Chinese, traveling on a shoestring and cultural exchange. Ben plans on pursuing doctoral studies in Political Science.
Spencer McCormick was raised in the verdant suburbs of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He left to attend NYU’s film program at the Tisch School of the Arts and has since worked on dozens of productions, small and large. Ultimately, he wants to figure out how to use ubiquitous computing to tell stories in novel ways. Last November, he ran the ING New York Marathon with a camera strapped to his head. Follow him through Africa on Twitter. www.spencermccormick.com
